Most in-demand skills in data and AI

The demand for specific skills in AI and data has grown explosively and is developing at high speed. Due to the global race between countries and organizations, and the rapid evolution of AI technology, it is crucial to attract the right talent in time to stay relevant. These are the areas of expertise that employers will be actively seeking in 2025:

  • Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI): These are the clear front-runners. The demand for machine learning skills has increased by no less than 383%, and AI and ML together are growing by 17% annually. Companies are looking for expertise in AI frameworks, a solid understanding of data models, and the ability to integrate AI into existing systems.
  • Cloud Computing: With the shift to more flexible and scalable solutions, cloud expertise is crucial. The Dutch cloud market is expected to grow by 22% by the end of 2025. Knowledge of platforms such as AWS (Amazon Web Services), Azure (Microsoft Azure), and Google Cloud is therefore invaluable.
  • Data Engineering: As the volume of data grows exponentially, professionals are needed who can design, build, and manage data infrastructure. The demand for data engineering skills is expected to grow by 15% annually.
  • Cybersecurity: With predictions that AI agents will be involved in 25% of data breaches by 2028, cybersecurity skills are vital to protect AI systems and data.
  • DevOps and Agile Methodologies:These are essential for faster and more reliable software delivery. No less than 60% of companies are specifically seeking DevOps expertise.
  • Programming Languages and Tools: Python remains a top choice for AI and data science, alongside SQL for data management. Java, React, .NET, and Node are also in high demand. For AI frameworks, TensorFlow and PyTorch are crucial. Tools such as Snowflake and MongoDB for cloud infrastructure and data management are becoming increasingly important.

Upcoming regulations: The impact of the EU AI Act

A key development that will influence the demand for certain skills is the EU AI Act, which will come into effect in August 2025. This legislation focuses on regulating AI systems, particularly those considered high-risk. This means there will be a growing need for professionals who are not only technically skilled, but also knowledgeable in:

  • Ethical AI principles: Developing and implementing AI systems in a responsible and ethical manner.
  • AI governance and compliance: Ensuring that AI systems comply with new legal frameworks and internal guidelines.
  • Explainable AI (XAI): The ability to understand and explain AI system decisions.

The Dutch government is also working on an algorithm registry for high-risk AI systems, further emphasizing the importance of responsible innovation.

“The future of work lies in collaboration between humans and machines. Those who master data and AI will remain relevant. In a market full of technological innovation and new regulations, professionals stand out by continuously adapting and upskilling.”

Your Career Path in a Changing Market

The rapid adoption of AI makes continuous upskilling and reskilling essential. Employers place high value on practical experience and open-source contributions—often more than on formal degrees. This means that investing in relevant certifications and hands-on projects can significantly boost your career prospects. While automation is causing a slight decline in entry-level opportunities for certain tasks, the AI-driven transformation is creating a net increase in opportunities in the tech sector.

The future of work will increasingly revolve around collaboration between humans and AI, and the professionals who can harness this synergy will be the most valuable.

Starz in AI offers organizations high-quality “deta-vast” traineeships for in-demand roles such as AI Agent Architect, AI/Data Engineer, and AI Governance Manager. Our trainees complete an extensive 12- to 24-month training and education program through the StarzAIcademy, after which candidates are transferred to the client at no cost. We provide a tailor-made program to develop the latest skills and gain hands-on experience with the most up-to-date AI and data tools. Feel free to contact us for more information.
